We are a non-profit organization of private citizens whose goal is to honor and remember Kurt Cobain in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington and give fans a place to visit and pay their respects to one of the greatest musicians that ever lived.
Is this project sponsored or otherwise related to city government?
No. The Kurt Cobain Memorial Project is a private group that is not tied to the City of Aberdeen in anyway. Two of our committee members are city councilmen but are participating in this project as private citizens who would like to see our goals met.
Does this project have the support of the City of Aberdeen council and mayor?
Yes.
Are any tax dollars being used to support this project?
No.
Are any of the members of the Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee paid for their services or efforts?
No. All members of the committee are volunteer.
What happens if the committee fails to reach its goals and complete all projects or what if any money is left over?
Any unused or excess proceeds will be given to the Kurt Cobain Memorial Art Scholarship currently offered by Aberdeen High School.
What is the timeline for these projects?
ASAP. Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of land deals, negotiations, finances and various other factors that complicate the projects.
Is it true Kurt Cobain hated Aberdeen?
No. While it is true that Kurt said some derogatory things about Aberdeen from time to time and had some negative experiences here it has been stated by Krist Novoselic that neither he nor Kurt hated Aberdeen. In fact, in a 1995 speech to the Hoquiam City Council, Krist told a story about how he and Kurt liked to talk about the good times they had here. For someone as artistic as Kurt, Aberdeen didn't offer any outlets for his creativity. We as a committee are hoping to change that for future generations.
Is it true Aberdeen hated/hates Kurt?
No. Kurt has received the same reaction from conservative older folks that any "rock star" would receive. Nirvana was probably more popular here among younger people than most places across the nation. National journalists searching for an "angle" for their pieces tended to focus on the negatives of Aberdeen and looked for evidence to back that up. This included one legendary example of a reporter going into a tavern at noon and searching for anyone there who might say something to back up their theory that Aberdeen residents as a whole are poverty-stricken alcoholics lacking in culture. In sum, you find what you're looking for.
Where was Kurt born?
Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington. It is constantly reported Kurt was born in Hoquiam. At the time of Kurt's birth in 1967, just like now, there is no hospital in Hoquiam. Kurt lived in Hoquiam for a brief period of time as an infant.
Why has it taken until now for Aberdeen to do a project like this?
For this we do not have a ready answer. We can only say we believe it is a mistake we are trying to correct and we are hoping to get support to do so.
