Founding Nirvana member Krist Novoselic is among the first three Washington citizens to be chronicled in a new series of oral histories commissioned by Secretary of State Sam Reed and compiled by veteran journalist John Hughes.

The president of the Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee, Jeff Burlingame, introduced Novoselic to the TV audience and several dignitaries Feb. 24 at the Office of the Secretary of State in Olympia, where the oral history program, part of The Legacy Project, was unveiled. Burlingame thanked Novoselic for supporting his nonprofit organization. Novoselic has called the efforts of the Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee "good work."

The oral histories were collected and the biographies written by Hughes, an award-winning journalist from Novoselic's and Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen. The histories are posted to the secretary of state's Web site, along with photo galleries of the subjects. The Novoselic oral history is believed to be the most thorough piece ever published on the legendary rocker.

At the event, Novoselic told the crowd why he has decided to return to make his permanent home in the state where he was raised. "You make it big in the music industry and you think you can move to Beverly Hills, or Palm Springs, or somewhere, but I love Washington state," he said. The friendly people and the state's geological diversity are two specifics he cited.

The Novoselic oral history -- along with the histories of the two other honorees: pioneering reporter Adele Ferguson and the first black member of the state's Supreme Court, Charles Z. Smith -- are available online at the secretary of state's Web site.

Novoselic's history is at http://www.secstate.wa.gov/legacyproject/oralhistories/KristNovoselic/default.aspx.
